Biesterfeld Plastic: Innovative Electric and Electronics Portfolio for E-Mobility

New technologies in e-mobility entail increased requirements for plastics and call for innovative product adaptations. Especially when it comes to higher electrical voltages and flame retardance, sophisticated materials are needed to satisfy these stringent requirements and enable all components to be combined optimally in electric vehicles.

Electric motors are operated within the high-voltage range and therefore require special labelling. New in the plastics distributor’s product portfolio and an innovation for the e-mobility industry: the Crastin® type FR684NH1 OR162. This product enables a colour-fast orange colouration of high-voltage applications even at increased application temperatures. The product has a CTI of 600V and is listed as UL94 V0. Crastin® FR684NH1 exhibits improved flow properties in comparison to halogenated, flame-retardant types, while offering rigidity, heat resistance and toughness coupled with excellent electrical insulating performance. This innovative Crastin® type is ideally suitable for orange plug connections in hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

High-voltage applications in e-mobility also raise the risk of fire, with the result that flame-retardant materials will increasingly be used in future. With Elastollan® 1185 A 10 FHF, Biesterfeld has a flame-retardant TPU in its portfolio – it is ideally suitable for sheathing charging cables and plugs. The product fulfils the requirements of UL94 V0 fire classification, offering not only a high degree of flexibility and wear resistance but also good weatherproofing and hydrolytic stability.

Besides high thermal stability and good impact strength at cold temperatures, Lupoy® PC/ASA blends also demonstrate very good UV resistance and outstanding properties for high-gloss and matt surfaces. As UL94 V0 certified material, they provide increased flame retardance for injection moulding applications. Thanks to excellent chemical resistance, tremendous workability and very good electrical properties, the product can be utilised in charging station components, for instance housing parts for displays.
“The topic of e-mobility poses major challenges for the automotive industry. With our innovative products and solutions, we provide our customers with high-performance plastics and additives an integral approach to the successful implementation of their e-mobility concepts” states Niklas Bornhöft, Project Manager E-Mobility, Biesterfeld Plastic.

“The interplay of all components in the vehicle is tremendously important for efficient energy concepts. With its diverse product portfolio, Biesterfeld Plastic attaches great importance to developing and refining individual vehicle components tailored to the customer”, declares Dietmar Zinkand, Business Manager Technical Polymers, Biesterfeld Plastic.
