Innovative portfolio of adhesives and products for fibre composites in the field of e-mobility

This year’s Composites Europe trade fair is where you will find Biesterfeld Spezialchemie’s innovative range of fibre composites and adhesives for use in the e-mobility industry. The advanced technologies used in this segment not only lead to increased challenges, but also require inventive and ingenious product modifications. There is a need for sophisticated materials which can meet stringent flame resistance regulations and are suitable for use in lightweight constructions.

The latest addition to Biesterfeld’s product range is the BALSASUD® Core material from CoreLite®. It is available either as surface-treated or untreated balsa wood. The use of an innovative PC11+ epoxy-based coating seals the pores in the wood and can reduce its ability to absorb resin by up to 75%. Using BALSASUD® Core not only significantly reduces weight but, when used as an additional coating, also offers improved bonding properties during the lamination process. Thanks to its exceptional shear and compression strength, this product is absolutely ideal for use in the e-mobility sector and can provide increased stability and safety for electrical vehicles.
BALSASUD® Core makes it possible to develop lightweight vehicle bodies which can compensate for the weight of the energy storage systems they require. Balsa wood is also a naturally fire-resistant material and is exceptionally hard-wearing and resistant to fatigue. It can be used, for example, for engine bonnets or vehicle floors.

Electrical vehicles are made of a complex mix of materials, including fibre composites, metals and plastics. Biesterfeld Spezialchemie has an extensive portfolio of MMA adhesives manufactured by Scigrip, which are excellent at bonding the many lightweight materials involved. They can be applied directly, without time-consuming surface pretreatments, and stand between epoxy adhesives and PU adhesives, offering exceptional strength combined with outstanding flexibility. In addition to joining metals, the real strength of MMA adhesives lies in their ability to join together different materials. Consequently, they can not only be used to build vehicle bodies, but also to bond carbon fibre and metal.

“Legal requirements to further reduce CO2 emissions while also increasing the distance vehicles can travel, mean that finding lightweight construction materials and techniques is becoming ever more important in the e-mobility sector. With our rapidly expanding range of products, we are able to offer tailored customer support for the latest developments in e-mobility design and construction”, stated Dr. Johannes Martin, Performance Products Sales Manager, Biesterfeld Spezialchemie.
