Polyester Resins

Product description

Unsaturated polyester resins (UP resins) belong to the group of synthetic resins whose main component consists of various types of polyester based on isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, orthophthalic acid, isophthalic acid/neopentyl glycol (ISO/NPG) or dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). The crosslinking takes place at room temperature based on a radical polymerisation. They are used in almost all processes for the production of glass fibre-reinforced plastics, such as hand lay-up, spray lay-up or the vacuum infusion method. Depending on the chemical basis of the matrix, fibre-reinforced plastics have good chemical, hydrolysis or fire resistance. For applications in the area of boatbuilding, yacht building, rail and transportation industry and others, UP resins are available according to the required regulations (Germanischer Lloyd, DIN EN 45545).

Chemical base Properties Application
Orthophthalic acid Standard resin with low chemical resistance but good mechanical resistance at short curing times (pot life of about 7-40 minutes) Boat construction, pond construction, polymer concrete, sanitary areas with good adhesion to acrylic
Isophthalic acid High-quality resin with good strength parameters, hydrolysis and chemical resistance Applications requiring corrosion resistance (acid/water)
Isophthalic acid/Neopentyl glycol (ISO/NPG) Very high mechanical stability and very high resistance to hydrolysis, chemicals and UV Polymer concrete, CIPP
Terephthalic acid Highest resistance to chemicals and hydrolysis, high heat resistance, very good mechanical stability Polymer concrete, CIPP, manual laminating processes where high mechanical and chemical resistance is required
Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) Very low styrene emissions, low shrinkage Suitable for use in production halls where low levels of styrene emissions are required according to the most important health, safety and environmental issues
