Biesterfeld Spezialchemie invited selected customers from the pharmaceutical industry to a seminar in Frankfurt in order to present the latest findings on topical formulations and the products they contain. In addition to experts from Biesterfeld, experts from our partners DOW Silicones and CP Kelco were also on hand, as was Lisa Binder from the Department for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy of the University of Vienna.
Hella Kruse, Product Manager Healthcare, Biesterfeld Spezialchemie, started with an overview of the criteria that must be considered when using different additives in the galenic development of formulations: effectiveness, patient compliance, price, and individual criteria for contents and additives. In addition, she reported on Biesterfeld Spezialchemie's research activities in this area. Next, Emre Akgün, Sales Manager Healthcare, Biesterfeld Spezialchemie, introduced the Zemea® USP-NF Propanediol product from DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. This product is a 1,3-propanediol obtained from corn with properties including a moistening and preservative effect. It can be used as an alternative to propylene glycol and glycerol in topical formulations, for example.
Lisa Binder from the University of Vienna gave a presentation on the suitability of a nonionic silicone-based emulsifier from the DOW Silicone portfolio for stabilising a water-in-oil emulsion (W/O). Microscopic and rheological studies were used to investigate and verify the positive effect of the emulsifier on the stability of the emulsion. In subsequent presentations, DOW Silicones introduced its silicone-based additive, which is having a positive effect on both active substance release and patient acceptance, while CP Kelco presented its hydrocolloids and their thickening and stabilising properties, along with some application examples.
